The Clearing

The Clearing

*The clearing.ACTUAL.UKcoverIn 1976, four boys walked into a jungle. Only three came back alive.

Haunted by terrifying childhood memories he doesn’t fully understand, journalist Nate Mason returns to the Caribbean island of St. Lucia where he grew up.

Back then, as the son of a diplomat, he was part of an elite social circle. But during a weekend of whispered secrets and dares in a decaying jungle mansion staffed by the descendants of slaves, Nate’s innocence was torn apart.

The survivors of that gathering blamed what happened on a myth, an unseen terror from the bush. No one believed them. But now. almost forty years later, is the truth finally about to come out?

Within hours of arriving back on the island, Nate becomes convinced he’s being followed. He soon discovers that his search for answers could cost him his sanity as well as his life, as he realises that some childhood nightmares never go away.

Can childhood nightmares haunt you for the rest of your life? How much do you need to believe in a monster for it to become real? The Clearing is a dark and atmospheric psychological thriller, full of intrigue, terror and superstition, which examines our deepest fears of the unknown. A potent mix of the friendship and bravery of Stand By Me and the betrayals and fear of Angel Heart.

LETTERS is out now!

LETTERS is out now!

LettersFromAMurderer-144dpiNew York, 1891. A new breed of cop for a new breed of killer…

One genius criminal profiler. One ruthless, streetwise cop. Both will need all their wits to capture the most notorious killer of all time.

New York, 1891. A prostitute is found brutally murdered. The victim bears the same hallmarks as a notorious recent killing spree in England.

Could it be that killer has crossed the Atlantic to fresh killing grounds? Or is this simply a copycat murder? Fear spreads through a city already rife with cut-throat gangs, corruption and vice.

Aristocratic English pathologist, Finley Jameson, is teamed up with Joseph Argenti, a streetwise New York cop, to solve the case. But as the body-count rises and the killer taunts his pursuers in open letters, Jameson & Argenti find themselves fighting not just to prevent yet more victims, but also to save the city’s very soul.

The first in a series of hard-boiled New York Victorian mysteries, featuring Finley Jameson & Joseph Argenti.

If Arthur Conan Doyle had been asked to write a sequel to Gangs of New York, then this would be it.

Robert Bailey at SIBA!

Robert Bailey at SIBA!

Guest blog by Robert Bailey

I had the privilege of being a presenter at the Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance (“SIBA”) trade show this past weekend (September 20-21, 2013) in New Orleans.  The show started with a kick off luncheon on Friday, September 20, where I signed a book for Paige Crutcher with Publisher’s Weekly along with several booksellers who were sitting at my table.  All seemed interested in The Professor, and I was especially pleased to have put a copy of the book in Crutcher’s hands, as she reviews novels with a southern flavor for PW; she actually received the first signed copy of The Professor.

On Friday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., I was one of twenty-five presenters at the “First 180 Days Party,” which was a festive affair that was part cocktail party and part book signing.  During the event, I signed approximately 50 advanced copies of my novel for booksellers and other exhibitors.  Attached are several photographs of the occasion.  My wife, Dixie, and our great friends, Bill and Melanie Fowler (both of whom were early readers of The Professor), also attended the event and promoted the book along with the entire JKS Communications team headed by Julie Schoerke.  Julie is a barrel of positive energy, and the night concluded with Julie introducing me to John Grisham’s sister, who is a publisher in Nashville and was excited to get a signed copy of The Professor.

Book signing at SIBA 2

On Saturday, September 21, I had a private signing at the JKS Communications booth from 11:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon on the trade show floor, signing approximately fifteen more books and talking up The Professor to numerous other booksellers and authors.  Julie and her team were very active, passing out Mardi Gras themed gifts to those that stopped by the booth.

Book signing at SIBA (me and Dixie)

Overall, I think SIBA was a great way to kick off our publicity campaign for The Professor.  The ARC’s are very well done and I had a number of folks comment on Winston Groom’s blurb that dons the front of the book, several of whom said they had to grab a copy after reading the blurb.  Anyway, we are off to a great start!

So true, so true, but not everything is high this summer. In fact, quite the reverse. Here at Exhibit A, we’ve been keeping our prices attractively low.

Our sexy summer promotion – “Ex on the Beach” – has just entered its third seductively scintillating week, meaning our first four paperback titles are still available to buy as eBooks at 99p in the UK and $1.99 in the US.

But if that offer’s not hot enough to turn your head, then get this: we’re now also giving away:

To win, all you need to do is RT one of our “we’re giving away free cinema tickets & popcorn!” tweets on Twitter.

Do that and we’ll put your name in the hat. And the more times you do it, the more times we’ll put your name in. Then, come September, we’ll blindfold a randomly chosen member of the Exhibit A posse and ask them to pluck out a lucky winner’s name.

But for now, while you’re nervously biting your nails and thinking, Have I won? and Who should I take?,  don’t forget to get stuck into one of our four fabulous launch titles at these sexy summer prices:

Hard Road Launch!

Q: What do you get if you combine a brilliant Scottish thriller with a brilliant Scottish indie bookstore?

A: Reinforced glass!

Because the book in question is Hard Road by J B Turner.

Hard Road by J.B. Turner

And the bookstore is Edinburgh’s finest Looking Glass Books.

Looking Glass Books Looking Glass Books

Did you see what we did there? Yes, that’s right. Hard Road + Looking Glass = Reinforced glass.

Brilliant, huh? OK, so maybe not so much. And OK again, so we admit it’s not too likely that anyone from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival is likely to be nominating us any time soon for the ‘Funniest Joke of the Festival’ award. Because any joke that needs explaining isn’t a joke at all.

But the good news is that one thing that doesn’t need explaining is J B Turner’s Hard Road. All you’ve got to do is open this race-against-the-clock conspiracy thriller featuring ex-Special forces operative Jon Reznick at page one. And right away, you’ll be hooked. And then the only thing you’ll need to explain to your friends and loved ones is why you’ve not been picking up your emails or phone.

And the best place to get a copy? Well, that’s easy too. J B will be signing copies tonight from 6.30 at Looking Glass Books. There will be wine too. And a good time will be had by all.

In fact, the only thing that could possibly make it better would be everyone who reads this and lives near Edinburgh turning up. You’re all invited and all welcome.

Hard Road by J B Turner is out now in paperback and ebook in the UK and US.

Oh, and if any of you were wondering who did win the Edinburgh Fringe Festival Joke of the Year – this answer’s here.

Here a little more about the book itself.

Private eye and former war reporter, Maier is sent to Cambodia to track down the missing heir to a Hamburg coffee empire.

His search leads him into the darkest corners of the country’s history, through the Killing Fields of the communist revolution, to the White Spider, a Nazi war criminal who reigns over an ancient Khmer temple deep in the jungle.

But the terrifying tale of mass murder that Maier uncovers is far from over. And soon Maier realises that, if he is to prevent more innocent lives from being destroyed, he will have to write the last horrific chapter himself.

The Cambodian Book of the Dead – it’s where Apocalypse Now meets The Beach…

Exhibit A Signs William Shakespeare & Bartholomew Daniels in
Two Book Historical Mystery Deal

Following the discovery of several – soon-to-be-authenticated – new Shakespearean manuscripts, Exhibit A, the crime fiction imprint of publisher Angry Robot, has signed Bartholomew Daniels for two books.

Exhibit A’s Commissioning Editor, Emlyn Rees, bought World English rights in Rotten at the Heart and a second Will Shakespeare mystery from Stacia Decker at Donald Maass, New York.

Rotten at the Heart is the first in a series of new Shakespearean mysteries, narrated by the Bard himself. With his patron’s mysterious death leaving Will on the brink of ruin and eviction, he’s forced to fall back on his own inimitable powers of observation in order to ferret out the killer and in so doing unravel a conspiracy that goes straight to the beating heart of the court of Queen Elizabeth I.

Exhibit A’s Commissioning Editor Emlyn Rees said: “Who better to solve a crime than the keenest observer of human nature in history? Fans of C J Sansom and David Liss will adore this fine blend of historical fact and murder mystery.”

Bartholomew Daniels said: “”Shakespeare the writer is the colossus of English literature. But Shakespeare the man is an enigma. These manuscripts I’ve been privileged enough to discover and edit cast new light on Shakespeare’s secret life as a detective in the cut-throat world of Elizabethan England.”

Exhibit A will publish Rotten at the Heart in April 2014 simultaneously in the UK and US in paperback and eBook.

The author, Bartholomew Daniels, is an avid book collector and it was through his purchase of a wooden chest of unwanted novels and forgotten papers at an estate sale in Illinois last year that he made the extraordinary discovery of these lost Shakespearean journals. Bartholomew is also a close friend of novelist Dan O’Shea, author of hard-hitting Chicago thriller Penance, who encouraged him to set about editing these manuscripts so that modern readers might be able to thrill to them also.

Wounded Prey

Wounded Prey

Sean Lynch is the real life ex-Commander of a San Francisco Bay Area Detective Division.

Wounded Prey is his thrillingly authentic debut novel.

Here’s what some of the recent reviews have had to say:

“Think First Blood meets No Country For Old Men.” — Matt Hilton, bestselling author of the Joe Hunter series.

“Be prepared to go to the dark side in this harrowing, fast-paced thriller.” — Kristin Centorcelli at Criminal Element.

“If you’re looking for the new Michael Connelly – a big thriller with heart, plausibility and sense of grounding that few other writers can match – then you’re really going to want to keep an on Lynch. He keeps this up, he’ll be a big part of the next generation of thriller writers.” — Russel D McLean in Crime Scene Scotland.

And here’s a little bit more about the book itself:

A young girl is snatched in broad daylight from outside her school and later found brutally murdered and hanging from a tree.

When recently retired San Francisco Police Inspector, Bob Farrell, sees this on the news, he realises his worst nightmare has just come true. The same brutal killer a government agency stopped him from putting away twenty years before is once more on the loose.

As the killer wreaks a trail of blood and destruction across North America, Bob Farrell teams up with rookie cop Kevin Kearns and sets out to track down their lethal prey.

But Farrell and Kearns are not playing by the rules any more than the killer is, and soon the FBI have all of them in their sights…

A visceral and heart-wrenching cross between No Country For Old Men and  The Silence of the Lambs, this is an exhilarating debut from a thrillingly authentic author.

And, last of all, here’s where you can bag yourself a copy right now:Wounded Prey by Sean Lynch, June 2013

Scare Me! ExA Hijack!

Scare Me! ExA Hijack!

I’m not sure if I’m more honoured to be one of the launch titles for Exhibit A or to have been able to hijack the home page like this but let me tell you, it’s pretty nerve-wracking. The only conditions were to lock up after I finished and leave the place as I found it. Maybe they were too trusting. What’s this? A tub of dried scorpions? Looks like Emlyn Rees has left his lunchbox behind.

But it’s looking none too shabby here. If you click on the main menu above you’ll find a host of great names under ‘Authors.’ Please check out their books – there are some really diverse and radical crime fiction titles there and some names I’m sure you’ll be hearing a lot more from in the very near future.

Scare Me by Richard Parker, May 2013Meantime, my stand alone thriller Scare Me has found its way into bookshops and is available to buy online and I’ve already heard from a lot of people who pre-ordered and are now getting stuck into it. Two of them read late into the morning and finished in one sitting. I can’t think of better feedback to receive.

It should be available in all good ebook formats and as an audio book very soon. And check out this competition to win a signed copy.

We’re still excited by the movie rights deal for Scare Me and, as Wentworth Miller dives into the adaptation for Hollywood studio Relativity Media, I hope to keep you updated about any developments in that quarter.

Exhibit A will be posting bulletins here plus the Scare Me website is now live at, so there will be more news there. I’d love you to swing by. The carpets have only just been laid, however, so if you wouldn’t mind taking off your shoes I’d be really grateful.
